The SRMUH Centre for Intellectual Property Rights has celebrated the World IP Day on 26th of April, 2024 with three student-driven activities i.e. Debate Competition, Quiz Competition and the Poster- Making Competition. Starting with the first- student driven activity i.e. the Debate Competition on the theme “IP and the SDGs: Building our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity.”
DEBATE COMPETITION
Objective
The main objective of the first event was to generate effective critical thinking into primary issues related with Sustainability and IP Rights. The aim of organizing debate competition was to hone the public speaking skills of the students and teach them to be articulate while expressing their thoughts and opinions. The session was the kaleidoscope of opinions, thoughts and perspective that enhanced the knowledge and understanding about the cashless economy among students.
ABOUT THE EVENT
- The Debate Competition has followed the theme of World IP Day which had two topics for debate for an individual participant has to select either from the topic and has to speak either “for the motion” or “against the motion of the topic”.
- The first topic was “Is "Green IP" a necessary component of sustainable development?” and the second topic was “Should patent protection be prioritised to encourage innovation in climate change solutions, or should there be more emphasis on open collaboration and sharing of ideas?”
- An active participation and enthusiasm was seen in the participants.
- A participant was allowed to speak for minimum 3 minutes and maximum 5 minutes adding on to a rebuttal round of 2 minutes.
JUDGEMENT CRITERIA
- The participants are judged upon the grounds Argumentation & Logic, Clarity & Organisation, Rebuttal & Counterarguments, Delivery & Style and Critical Thinking & Engagement.
- The competition is graced by a THREE- JUDGE PANEL involving Dr. Aditi Dev, Associate Professor, Faculty of English, Ms. Rufi Khan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law and Ms. Raka Medhavi, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law.

The positive feedback received from the attendees highlighted the depth of discussions and the expertise of the panellists. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the event. The event concluded with the efforts of all the patient participants, judges and co-ordinators.
QUIZ COMPETITION
Objective
The objective of the quiz competition was to test the participant’s understanding and awareness of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and relevant laws. Through a series of challenging questions and scenarios, participants were encouraged to deepen their knowledge of various aspects of IPR, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, and their role in fostering innovation and economic growth. Participants were tested on their understanding of laws and regulations related to IPR and sustainable development, fostering a comprehensive understanding of legal frameworks and their implications for societal progress. Ultimately, the competition intended to inspire participants to become advocates for IPR protection, sustainable development, and the rule of law in their communities and beyond.
ABOUT THE EVENT
- The Quiz Competition consisted of two rounds: Preliminary rounds and Final rounds.
- The Preliminary rounds comprised 30 questions in which the top 10 qualified for final rounds.
- In total, there were 43 participants in the event, each of them were assigned a unique badge for identification prior to the commencement of quiz.
- During the competition, questions were displayed for 30 seconds, and participants marked their answers on OMR sheets.
1st position was backed by Umang from B.A.LLB 1st year. (Rs.1000 prize).
2nd position was backed by Harsh Bansal from B.B.A.LLB 1stYear.(Rs.750prize).
3rd position was backed by Rajan B.A.LLB 3rd Year. (Rs.500 prize)
43 students from different departments of SRM University took part in the Quiz Competition.

POSTER MAKING COMPETITION
Objective
The poster making competition aims to unleash students creative expression while evaluating their comprehension and awareness of diverse trends in intellectual property. By encouraging participants to visually articulate their understanding of intellectual property concepts, the competition fosters artistic exploration and innovative communication. Through this platform, students not only showcase their creativity but also deepen their understanding of the importance of intellectual property rights in contemporary contexts. Additionally, the event cultivates critical thinking skills as participants navigate the complexities of intellectual property issues and effectively convey their ideas to a broader audience. Ultimately, the competition serves as a catalyst for promoting both creativity and intellectual engagement among students.
